Hello you! My name is Hanna Helsø, but you might know me as @helsoe on Instagram. I'm a 19-year-old sneakerhead from Norway. The headline says it all, today we are talking about sneakers and taking a closer look at my sneaker closet.
How it all started
I've always been crazy about shoes that really stood out, but my sneaker obsession truly started when I moved out at the age of 16. I was searching for some outstanding colourways, and then I realised that some sneakers are harder to cop than others. I managed to cop a pair from a Nike Air Max 90 city collection that I really wanted and I've tried to keep myself updated on the releases ever since.
My sneaker collection
My shoe collection consists of approximately 100 pairs, but at this point I am not counting. Some of the shoes haven't been worn in years, but at the same time I could never throw any of my babies away. I love each one of them. In my sneaker closet you will find a good mix of everything, from high tops to low tops and classics, to really outstanding silhouettes. I own sneakers from different brands, but it's easy to notice that my favourites are Nike and adidas.
How I stock my sneakers
I get a lot of attention and questions about the way I stock my sneakers, which is more like a display. I really like all of my sneakers to be easily accessible, although it's not optimal for the shoes. The shelves are actually just adjustable IKEA Billy bookcases. The benefit with having small feet (UK 5) is that my sneakers take up much less room! I also have space to stock some of the sneaker boxes on the top of the shelves, I can't get myself to throw them away either.
How I pick my outfits
When I'm picking out an outfit, I always start with the sneakers first and then I figure out what clothes to wear with them. When it comes to the clothes, it's important to me that I can wear something comfortable but at the same time something that will feel fresh. Most of my closet consists of neutral-coloured, simple clothes, which are easy to pair with most of the sneakers. My shoes are my statement piece.
My top 5 sneakers at the moment
It's always hard to pick out favourites, it changes all the time. I wish I could pick more pairs but these are my top 5 sneakers at the moment, in no particular order.
Air Jordan 1 Retro High “Bred Toe” - I can't pick my top 5 sneakers without a pair of Jordan 1s, and right now this is my favourite colourway.
Dressing in all black is a perfect way to show off these shoes. I matched the Bred Toe with some straight black pants from Zara and a black long sleeve tee from Stone Island. I'm obsessed with shoulder bags and I love this red one from Supreme, it matches the shoes perfectly.
Off White x Nike Air VaporMax - This is the only pair I have from the Nike x Off White collaboration, even though I wish I had more of them. Virgil Abloh is a super talented and creative soul. This, in my opinion, is the best VaporMax so far.
I chose to pair Levi's wedgie fit jeans with these shoes. I laced them in blue on one shoe and white on the other, and picked a t-shirt from a local store to match the blue laces. I like it when shoes come with extra laces so I can change it up sometimes. I also added a white coach jacket from Sweet SKTBS.
adidas Yeezy Powerphase “Calabasas” - Such an underestimated sneaker in my opinion. Kanye did a perfect job mixing classic and retro styles with this pair, and the leather is super soft as well.
This is a perfect summer shoe for me. Another great fit for this season is ripped jeans and t-shirts. I chose a white simple tee from Selected and a pair of Levi's 501 jeans.
Acronym x Nike Lunar Force 1 – Another summer essential. There's just something about all-white shoes! I have to mention that these are super comfortable. A simple shoe with eye-catching details.
A minimalistic shoe like this goes well with every outfit. I chose to style them with some straight pants from Zara and a white long sleeve tee from Comme Des Garçons.
Custom Air Force 1 – I'm in love with this shoe, which may be because I designed them myself. This shoe was customised by the talented guys at @fitinklife, and I couldn't ask for more. I like the way customising gives everyone the opportunity to make their dream shoe, I can't wait for my next customised pair!
I like to wear pink with these customs, and this time I choose a pink hoodie from Löwetand. I combined this with some vintage ripped up Levi's 501 jeans that I found in my grandmother's attic.
My all-time favourite models
Since we are talking about my favourite sneakers, I have to mention my all-time favourite models, the Nike Air Force 1 Low and the Air Jordan 1 Retro High. They are both represented on my top 5 list. There are so many nice colourways and collaborations with these models, and you can never go wrong with Nike's OG designs. Their timeless silhouettes are a must-have to me, and I will always hunt for a good colourway. They are both simple shoes that will never go out of style.
My latest pick-up
I got super lucky on May 19th and copped two pairs of sneakers! They just arrived and are still deadstock, but I'm super excited to wear them. I got my hands on Skepta's Nike Air Max 97/BW and the Air Jordan 1 Homage to Home. There's a big chance that one, or even both, will make it to my top 5 list during the next few weeks.
My next purchase
I have a long wish list of sneakers that definitely would get a good spot in my sneaker closet. I'm not sure about my next purchase, but I'm thinking about buying a pair of Jordan 1 Satin Shattered Backboard shoes. I really don't like to pay more than retail for my sneakers, that happens very rarely, but it's my birthday soon and I might have to buy myself a gift. There's always a good excuse to buy some new shoes!
